One and a half years ago, Aspen pulled me away from my numerous worries about balancing work and life on our wild, off-grid property. She begged me to go play, and I begrudgingly went. As she started to skip down the path, she made a profound statement that became the subject of this viral blog post. Then it formed the introduction to my book.
Looking back, I had forgotten all the problems with the property we were dealing with at the time: broken septic, living with a generator as our only power source, flooding of our road, and the impending winter. We always say, “years from now we’ll look back at this time and laugh about the conditions we were living in.”
And while some of these issues have resolved, the unpredictability of the weather will always be a factor. There will always be problems to solve, and there will always be work to do. But opportunities to connect and play with a child are fleeting. This is one of the reasons I decided to write my book.
On the most recent episode of the Lean Out Podcast, I read the short introduction from Lean Out: A Professional Woman’s Guide to Finding Authentic Work-Life Balance. I hope you enjoy it!
