I heard about Dr. Weili Gray’s fledgeling podcast the Dare to Dream Physician through a friend. I happened to listen to an episode where she described how she had taken a 9 month sabbatical between fellowship and her first attending physician job out of training. Not only did she slow down, learn personal finance, and catch up with family and friends, she also road tripped with her husband and three little ones out west!
My kinda person.
At the end of the episode, she said, “I haven’t heard of anyone else doing something like this. If you know of someone who has, let me know.” I immediately emailed her and told her about my sabbatical experiences, and we became fast friends.
Weili is an anesthesiologist by training who practices sleep medicine in Vermont’s countryside. She founded Dare to Dream Physician with the mission to empower fellow doctors to dream big and embrace life through travel. With her husband and kids, she has crafted a dream life brimming with family adventures and extraordinary experiences. She’s a physician, podcaster, homeschooler, world traveler, homesteader… you can see we have some similarities in our backgrounds.
It was fun to hear about Weili’s evolution from a scared and pregnant intern on the path expected of her to a confident, multifaceted physician mom who knows what she wants. In addition to the magic of sabbaticals, we discuss finding yourself again after feeling lost, finding sustainable work-life balance without going the all-or-nothing route, and finding passions you may have forgotten. I hope you enjoy the episode!
