Have you ever felt like you picked the wrong career? Like you had a passion you did not honor and chose your professional path for another reason (certainty, security, expectations of others…)?
My guest on the Lean Out Podcast today had always wanted to be an artist. At age 16, she and her family emigrated from Korea to the United States, and all of a sudden, things were hard. Her parents struggled as shop owners while she attended high school without knowing any English. Being the hard worker and high achiever that she is, this experience led her to medicine: a career heavy on science and heavy on certainty.
Fast forward decades, Susie burned out in a high-octane, high-overhead private practice. After two years off and some wakeup calls, she made the courageous decision to live a dual life of medicine (albeit in a more sustainable practice) and art.
“I started out doing group shows, then my own shows… then international shows.”
She now ships her art all over the world.
In this episode, Susie and I talk about how medicine informs her art, and how art informs her practice of medicine. She gives sage advice to others about finding something to “refill your tank” and giving yourself permission to be kind to yourself. I know you’ll love this conversation!
