A profession is different than a job. Not that a job can’t have this, but professions ofen come with a calling. People in professions often have strong ties between their work and their identity.
My guest today on the Lean Out Podcast is the first male guest we’ve ever had on the show! Dr. Michael Foti is a dad, a husband, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Middletown, NY. He’s also active as a teacher and mentor to medical students, and he’s the Standardized Patient Program Coordinator at his institution.
Michael reached out to me wanting to share his story of leaning out on the podcast. At first I wasn’t sure, but after hearing his story, I knew I wanted to have a conversation with him. When you listen, you’ll hear more on my reasoning behind this decision. Mental illness affects people from all backgrounds and does not discriminate when it comes to professions. It’s estimated that approximately 300 physicians die by suicide each year. 10-15% of physicians will encounter a problem with substance abuse during their careers. Substance abuse and depression are even higher among attorneys.
Michael shares with us the depths of his burnout, which manifested in severe anxiety and depression. He goes deep into the feelings he experienced and how he found a way back to being “himself”. We also discuss if there are differences in leaning out between men and women professionals, but truly his experience can teach both men and women about how to triumph over tragedy.
There are great takeaways in this episode: start with yourself, help others along your journey for enhanced fulfillment, and how to deal with identities. I hope you enjoy it! You can listen below or by downloading the episode on your favorite listening platform.
