I have written and talked about the importance of alignment—aligning our work, values, and well-being to create a fulfilling life. In the most recent episode of The Lean Out Podcast, Dr. Jillian Rigert shared her deeply personal and powerful journey of redefining success and stepping into authenticity.
Jillian began her career on a high-achieving path toward becoming an Air Force oral surgeon. Yet, despite reaching the “top of the mountain,” she felt empty and unfulfilled. The relentless pursuit of achievement took a toll on her mental and physical health, ultimately leading to a life-threatening struggle with anorexia. It was in the depths of this experience—facing medical dismissal from the military, profound loneliness, and survivor’s guilt—that she started peeling back the layers of societal expectations and personal shame.
Jillian has currently leaned out from all medical practice and is studying Marriage and Family Therapy. She also coaches other physicians to break out of the confines of what society tells us we should do.
Her story is a testament to the power of slowing down, getting real help reassessing, and making intentional choices that align with our deepest values. If you’re feeling stuck in a path that no longer serves you, Jillian’s journey is a reminder that change—though difficult—is possible, and often necessary for true fulfillment.
