What if you like your job, but you want to participate fully in another passion at the same time? My guest on the Lean Out Podcast is Aman Costigan, an attorney who enjoys her work in administrative law but was not satisfied with her life being about “just the law”.
What she’s learned after 11 years law practice, starting a wellness side business and becoming a mom: “You don’t have to be like everybody else. You can be different, and if you do want to live differently … the first thing is accepting that. And it took me years to accept that I was different than the people I was working with or than the people that I saw around me … they were happy with the law being 100% of their lives.”
We discuss juggling roles when you have multiple interests, and Aman drops lots of time management tips. My bullet-point notes from her pearls:
- Money is life energy, so learn to downsize and spend intentionally on what really matters to you
- Work does not have to be the source of all your fulfillment
- Rely on open communication with your spouse/family members, always keeping in mind shared values
- Utilize time-saving services during particularly busy seasons (her favorites include a shared calendar, childcare specialists, meal preparation, and cleaning services)
- Plan for the long term and short term, always remembering your WHY for each activity
Aman is a time-management/productivity queen, down to the color-coded calendars. At the same time, her regular yoga and mindfulness practice allows her to see things as they are – to surrender and let go of perfection when necessary. She has also learned over time to set boundaries on her work time, which may translate to a longer career ladder than others. No worries for Aman.
