The epidemic of burnout spans across all professions and work environments. Some studies quote burnout rates as high as 70-80% of workers.
What is burnout?
Burnout is typically defined as a constellation of symptoms including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of accomplishment. Burnout occurs on a continuum, and along that continuum lie a multitude of potential physical and mental problems.
You’re lucky to escape burnout unscathed by one of these. But there is hope!
My guest on the most recent Lean Out Podcast is Charleston Edwards of OwnYour5to9.com. During a long career in corporate event planning, Charleston found himself burned out and ill. He decided to take his fate into his own hands by reassessing his and his family’s vision and values.
What we discuss
This episode is more like a conversation than an interview. If you haven’t read Lean Out or followed me on this blog for long, you’ll hear some things about my burnout story that you likely didn’t know. Charleston and I discuss:
- What our wakeup calls to change our work-life balance looked like
- How each of us moved beyond burnout
- Why we are both still working in our original professions despite currently being in the “sweet spot” or work-life balance
- What our work-life balance looks like now and what we’re doing next
I hope you enjoy our conversation!
